Hello all,

I have some 4/56 silk I am getting ready to use and need some information on how to block it. The stockings are no problem since I never block them but a shawl of pure silk is a different critter. Something in the back of my head say DO NOT block wet ala wool but thats is all I can remember. Any and all assistance is appreciated.

Blocking 100% silk

I have a small garment steamer, and I wonder if that might be a better option for blocking a silk lace scarf? Has anyone tried that? I don't especially want to use my iron!

Heavy heavy steam. Industrial yarns are waxed, they are pretty tough. I have good experiences blocking silk with steam, but I guess I should note I've never actually properly blocked it (pinning it out I mean).

Hi there - my methods are probably unthinkable to most people, but have always worked for me. Last year I made a ton of silk scarves with a DK 1-ply silk that I hand dye. After knitting I always lay them flat on my counter and lightly steam, shape by hand, then leave it alone til its completely dried - but have also made the mistake of getting too close and burning the finished item. The yarn itself had been washed and rinsed in fabric softener before knitting, so the steam itself was not harmful. I learned my lesson about getting the iron too close after I ruined a perfectly beautiful and insanely expensive scarf!
