I am somewhat at a loss as to how to calulate to get the correct size after washing. The yarn used is 3/45 Cashmere/Silk x 2 Crochet 3.5 mm hook.
Before washing 36 sts = 15cm, = 2.4st 1cm, 10 rows = 8.5cm. = 1.76rows 1cm
After washing 36sts = 14cm = 2.57 1cm, 10 rows = 7cm = 1.42rows 1cm
For instance if the back and front are 54cm each how do I calculate how many stitches I should work on. Is it the difference one should calculate and how is this done?
I would be very gratefully if anyone can help, have made several garments and then disapionted after washing and the do not fit as they should.

Stella,
If your finished (washed) item measures 2.57 st per cm and 1.42 rows per cm then you have to figure your pattern on these measurements for your finished item. Say you want it finished at 15 cm across and 40 cm long.
You multiply 2.57 st X 15 cm = 38.55 stitches (I would cast on 39 stitches or round up or down based on the pattern repeat. You can fudge a little).
Then you multiply 1.42 r X 40 cm = 56.8 rows (again I'd adjust this a bit to the pattern repeat and length you wanted).
Your question was:
"For instance if the back and front are 54cm each how do I calculate how many stitches I should work on?"
If your getting 2.57 st per cm and want 54 cm of stitches.....2.57 (st/cm) X 54 cm (wanted) = 138.78 stitches. Base your math off the one cm of stitches and/or rows. You will need to figure out how many decreases per cm in the sleeve and other areas of the sweater with this same answer.
Now your un-washed swatch is important so you can check yourself to be sure you are making your gauge. After you've knit a bit, I usually start on the back, measure your knitting. The stitches per cm should match your unwashed swatch measurement of stitches per cm and rows per cm.
